The Covid-19 pandemic has prompted many people to re-examine their lives and their priorities, especially around work. This has particularly been the case for women, who are more likely to have made big changes to their work schedule to care for children or loved ones during the lockdown.
At times like this, being your own boss can seem like a very tempting option – having the freedom to determine your own schedule, work on your own terms… and do work that feels uniquely meaningful to you. Perhaps you have always wanted to strike out on your own as a consultant, or open a doggy daycare, or you have an idea for an amazing new product that you want to develop and take to market.
Being your own boss can enable you to get align your personal mission with a direct impact on your community. You may feel a greater sense of reward and accomplishment in overcoming challenges and achieving your goals. And it is unlikely you will ever feel bored or unfulfilled. Importantly, being self-employed can also provide more flexibility in your schedule.
But it can be daunting too! You are the one making all the decisions, doing all the work, and taking on all the risk. Business ownership is a rollercoaster of emotions – fear, excitement, exhilaration, frustration, and accomplishment. And it can feel like you need to instantly be an expert at everything.
Still, being your own boss doesn’t mean you are all alone. At times like this, having someone to support and guide you on your journey can make a huge difference to your success (and your well-being) as a business owner.
This is where WEV comes in. WEV has helped women, minorities and other local entrepreneurs start and strengthen their own businesses for over 30 years – and business owners who participate in WEV’s programs have a significantly higher success rate than the national average. Within 12 – 18 months of receiving WEV services, 93% of existing businesses are still operating.
WEV offers a wide range of entrepreneurial training and financial education courses, including writing a business plan, developing a marketing strategy, and managing your personal finances. WEV has a dedicated group of business consultants who can guide you in achieving your business goals over the short and long term. And, importantly, WEV has small business funding available that is geared specifically to you.
One of the biggest benefits of coming to WEV, though, is the opportunity to be part of a community of other small business owners, donors, volunteers, and staff who are rooting for your success and are available to support you at every step along the way.
So, if you’re asking questions like “what’s really involved in running my own business?”, “how do I get started?”, or “how will I fund my new business?”, Get In Touch with WEV.
